Hello friends. We're very pleased to report that we recently harvested our first crop of native Giant kelp at Flinders. This involved a heck of a lot of trial and error but saw us bringing reproductive sorus tissue from the wild into our lab, propagating spore onto twine and later taking thousands of young kelp plants out to the farm to outplant on longlines several metres below the surface. This has been something a of breakthough and it's certainly the first time kelp has been successfully farmed in Victoria. We're now getting samples to local chefs and will get some into bags for retail sales too. As a zero input crop that requires no arable land, fresh water, fertilisers or pesticides we reckon it has real promise to come to play an important role in our local food system. A massive thanks to our local community here on the Ninch for all their love and support and also the talented James Geer for capturing our first harvest on film.
