OK so it was a bit of a hectic second half of 2025 but feel we need to share some pretty cool news with you.
Each year Delicious Magazine runs a national competition that showcases the produce of Australia’s best food producers. An epic list of state judges (local gun chefs) are assembled and if you get through the state round your produce is judged at the national round. The national judges included Danielle Alvarez, Karena Armstrong, Jo Barrett, Peter Gilmore, Lennox Hastie, Matt Moran, Alex Prichard, Matt Stone, Alla Wolf-Tasker. Yep, outright industry living legends.
Our dried Wakame sailed thru the Victorian round of judging and went on to win us the Change Maker Trophy for innovation and sustainability at national judging! We were invited to the awards presentation at Peter Gilmore’s Bennelong Restaurant at the Opera House (dressed in our newly acquired
op shop tuxedos) and had about the funnest night imaginable.
It's a real buzz for us to see Australian Seaweed being recognised in this way. Southern Seagreens is a small and incredibly labour-intensive operation but we have strong belief seaweed (and kelp generally) will come to play a key role in a more sustainable local food system. We want to say some big thanks to Andrew McConnel for nominating us, Jason Staudt from Stokehouse for championing us and Jo Barrett for her ongoing belief and support in what we do. And of course to the amazing folks at Delicious Magazine. Such a great initiative and superbly executed competition.
You can learn more and buy this dried Wakame in 30g packs on our webstore here. Perfect for home cooks wanting to cook with nutritious and very delicious local kelp species. If you'd like to learn more about how to cook with Wakame check out our recipes page.
